Sodium percarbonate is a white crystalline powder with the general formula 2 Na2CO3 - 3 H2O2. It is a compound of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide which is colorless, hygroscopic and water soluble. The abbreviation SPC (Sodium Per Carbonate) can sometimes be found. This compound contains 32.5% hydrogen peroxide by weight.
In the cleaning industry, sodium percarbonate is used in some eco-friendly bleaches or popular cleaning and bleaching products (e.g. Vanish, Tide, Oxyper, Oxiclean, etc.). It is most commonly found as a compound, with up to 65% sodium percarbonate and the remainder sodium carbonate. In concentrates or superconcentrates it is possible to find around 80%, although up to 100% can be found.
In water treatment, sodium percarbonate can be used for disinfection of drinking water, clarification or disinfection prophylaxis of drinking water pipes. It is superior to sodium hypochlorite in that it does not leave an odour and can be operated at higher temperatures. Compared to calcium hypochlorite, sodium percarbonate increases the carbonate hardness (which can be easily removed in more acidic water), but does not increase the amount of calcium that falls to the surface as a calcareous deposit.
In livestock farming, sodium percarbonate is used to disinfect surfaces, milk coolers and milking equipment. A 1-5% solution is used for surface disinfection and a 0.25-2% solution for disinfection of systems by circulating washing. Hunters use a 10% solution for bleaching the bones of trophy catches. Depending on the structure of the bones, the bleaching effect may vary.
In metalworking, it is used in flux soldering and in etching electronic circuit boards.Sodium percarbonate is also used as an oxidizing agent in precious metal recovery.
In cosmetics, sodium percarbonate (1,5-12%) is mixed with ammonium hydroxide to produce hair lighteners or hair bleaches, also known as 'peroxide blonding'. Sodium percarbonate is also used in teeth whitening and is therefore found in many whitening toothpastes. Sodium percarbonate is mixed with sodium chloride and sodium carbonate to produce a homemade toothpaste with a whitening effect.Key INCI Functions:
- Deodorant: reduces or masks unpleasant body odor
- Oxidizing: changes the chemical nature of another substance by adding oxygen or removing hydrogen
In laboratories, sodium percarbonate is used in organic synthesis to produce anhydrous hydrogen peroxide, or dry free oxygen, where sodium percarbonate is insoluble in organic solvents but can give off hydrogen peroxide. For example, in the synthesis of trifluoroperoacetic acid, the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation reactions are required. This is a relatively cheap way of carrying out the reaction without the use of high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide.
