Sodium formate, also known as sodium methanoate, is an organic salt with a wide range of applications.
At airports, sodium formate is used as a non-corrosive ice melting agent for runways. It is most commonly found in prepared products in combination with corrosion inhibitors and other additives as a strong and rapid anti-icing agent. Sodium formate breaks down the ice structure and dissolves it very quickly and prevents the ice from sticking to asphalt or concrete. Its low freezing point makes it superior to urea, which is quite commonly used, but urea causes severe eutrophication (vegetation growth, water damage). Surfaces treated with sodium formate do not ice over even at temperatures below -15 °C. The melting effect of sodium formate can be increased by adding potassium formate or potassium acetate.
In cosmetics, sodium formate is used as a toothpaste filler/base. It is also used as a pH buffer. Sodium formate stabilizes the enzymes and their action in manufactured products so that they are active for a longer time. It is also used as a natural preservative to protect cosmetic products from fermentation.
In construction, sodium formate is used in the preparation of concrete when work is carried out in winter at low temperatures. Adding 2% of the cement mass on a dry basis gives a freezing point of -5 °C for concrete. Adding 3% of the cement by weight on a dry basis gives a freezing point of -10 °C. Adding 4% by weight of cement on a dry basis gives a freezing point of -15 °C. Sodium formate shall be dissolved in warm water and dosed before the concrete is prepared. In this case, the quantity of water required must be reduced by 7-13 %.
In metalworking, sodium formate is used in the recovery of precious metals from solutions. Sodium formate displaces platinum from precious metal solutions but not gold. Platinum can thus be easily purified.
In the oil and gas industry, saturated sodium formate solutions are used as drilling and stabilization additives because of their relatively high density. Mixing saturated solutions of alkali metal formates can produce solutions with densities ranging from 1,0 to 2,3 g/cm3. Saturated formate solutions are biocidally stable over long periods. They become highly biodegradable when diluted with water. Alkali metal formates can be recovered and reused at the borehole site.
In the food industry sodium formate is used as a preservative (E237). The formate ion inhibits bacterial growth.
In leather processing, sodium formate is used to darken/dye leather to produce a dark leather effect.
In laboratories, sodium methanoate is used in combination with mineral acids as a buffer to raise the pH of the acids. It is also used to produce formic acid by a half-reaction with sulfuric acid.
