Silicon dioxide is a compound with the formula SiO2 and is commonly found in nature as quartz. It can be found both as a rock and as the main constituent of sand. Silica has a wide range of applications in both domestic and industrial applications.

In construction industry, silica is used as an ingredient in various mixes, plasters, aggregates, paving stones, paving slabs, and in the preparation of ready-mix concrete.

In water treatment, quartz sand is used as a fine-grained aggregate in swimming pool filters and drinking water treatment systems. Silica sand is suitable for use in drinking water filters, swimming pool filters, waste water treatment plants, water wells. Due to the uniform shape and size distribution of the quartz grains, contaminants are effectively removed from drinking water, swimming pools or wastewater. Quartz sand is chemically pure and therefore does not reduce water quality and does not react with acids, pollutants, organic solvents. The quartz sand traps dirt and fine debris from the pool in the water filter, which is then disposed of in the sewer. It is advisable to replace the sand in the filter approximately every 3-5 years, depending on the intensity of the pool's use and the filter loads. The finer the silica sand aggregate, the finer the particles it can filter. If the water appears cloudy and opaque, it is recommended to change the filter cartridge to a finer one to allow the filter to trap colloidal particles that are not filtered out by traditional cartridge filters.

In metalworking, quartz is used in sandblasting as an abrasive for cleaning the metal surface. Its selection depends on the roughness of the cleaning required, the nature of the surface to be machined and the subsequent machining. Quartz is used in the manufacture of metal molds because its high heat resistance does not change its properties.

In laboratories, quartz is used to maintain uniform heating, as heating on a flame results in sudden and uneven heating, whereas heating quartz results in uniform heating.

In ceramic processing, quartz is used in the manufacture of ceramic molds, toilets and sinks, and quartz cookware.

In the glass industry, quartz is used as a basic raw material in the manufacture of glass.

In electrical engineering, silica is used in the manufacture of semiconductor components to create PNP or NPN components by layering silicon and silica.

In floristry, silica is used in the manufacture of ornaments, layered sand vases, and in the coating of surfaces to give a rough effect.
