Sodium alpha-olefin sulphonate (AOS) is an organic compound that is completely soluble even in very hard water. AOS is an anionic surfactant. It has a synergistic (enhancing) effect with non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants.

In cosmetics it is used as a very strong surfactant for the deep removal of grease, hardened deposits. Very effective as a primary ingredient in shampoos, shaving, cosmetic bath foams. High foaming power. Formulations are phosphate or phosphonate free, otherwise oxidation of the double bond takes place and the molecule straightens out, resulting in a loss of skin softening properties. Concentrations used range from 4 to 30% depending on the desired foaming and cleansing effect.

In construction industry, sodium alpha olefin sulphonate is used both as a cleaning agent and as a foaming agent in the production of porous, foamed structures which are used as part of the duded part of insulation products.

In horticulture, sodium alpha olefin sulphonate is used to remove dangerous insects from meadows. A mixture of surfactants (sodium alpha olefin sulphonate), fatty acids and a thickener (modified starch/ guar gum/ alginate/ xanthan gum, etc.) is used. The prepared mixture is used to form the foam and the foam is applied to the lawn. The grass becomes sticky and insects stick to it. The product is non-toxic but effective. It washes off the grass when it rains.

In fire extinguishing AOS is used as a foaming/foaming agent. Due to its low ecotoxicity, easy biodegradation, low influence of hard water, high foaming and low irritation, AOS is very convenient for the production of firefighting foams, both as a main component and as a secondary component.

In the paint industry, sodium AOS is used as a component of dispersion systems when making paints, as a base for paints or as a component in self-made paints, as a pigment remover, a foaming agent or as a dirt remover.

In schools, AOS is used in fun experiments such as "elephant toothpaste", "burning foam", "soap bubbles", "sea of foam", etc., where it is necessary to induce foaming, to keep them stable for a longer time at different pH, temperature conditions. Sodium AOS is also used to prepare a homogeneous strongly magnetic aqueous solution with iron oxide Fe3O4. The solution is obtained at pH 4.8 and at a temperature of 170 K.
