Peracetic acid is also known as peroxyacetic acid (PAA) and is an organic peroxide with a characteristic acetic acid smell and can be highly corrosive.

In water treatment, peracetic acid is used as a disinfectant for drinking water systems. The popularity of its use is due to its very high effectiveness against biological contamination, its non-toxicity and its relatively low cost. It is commonly used in the disinfection of water treatment filters (softening and/or clarification) to remove biofilm from the filter charge. It can also be used for disinfection of wells, drinking water systems, and for the treatment of waste water from free chlorine and chlorinated compounds.

In the food industry, peracetic acid is used for disinfection of dairy and meat industry facilities. It can be used for the disinfection of premises by spraying and leaving it to act. Peracetic acid decomposes into water, oxygen and acetic acid, i.e. non-toxic components are formed, so that it does not contaminate food even if it were to enter it. The most commonly recommended concentrations for use are 150-200 ppm. Studies have shown that 30 mg/l peracetic acid was more effective than 250 mg/l sodium hypochlorite in removing S. aureus biofilm from stainless steel or polypropylene surfaces.
