Titanium dioxide is also known as titanium (IV) oxide or titania. If titanium dioxide is used as a pigment, you may come across names such as titanium white, white pigment 6 (PW6), or CI 77891. In the base it is derived from ilmenite, rutile anatase. It has a wide range of applications, e.g. in the paint industry, in sunscreens and in food colouring.

In the dyeing industry, titanium dioxide is very widely used because of its luminosity and its very high refractive index. Titanium dioxide crystals are perfectly round with a diameter of 220 nm, thus reflecting the maximum amount of the visible light spectrum. The level of purity of titanium dioxide determines to a large extent the level of reflected light, i.e. the pigment's efficiency and optical properties. Even small amounts of various metals (Cr, V, Cu, Fe, Nb) can alter the crystal structure and change the optical properties. TiO2 is a very effective bleaching agent in powder form and is used to obtain white colour in paints, coatings, plastics, white paper, food, pharmaceuticals (pills and tablets) and most toothpastes. In paints it is also known as 'brilliant white' or 'brilliant white' or similar descriptions. It can also be found in tartar paint.

In the manufacture of optical devices, titanium dioxide is used as a nano-coating to coat surfaces. This produces dielectric mirrors that reflect only certain wavelengths of light. It is also used in jewellery and various decorations to coat surfaces, producing "mystical fire topazes" or playful reflections of rainbow colours.

In cosmetics, titanium dioxide is used both as a pigment but also as a UV protector and skin brightener. Titanium dioxide is most often used in combination with zinc oxide, because it is more effective and less harmful to coral reefs than oxybenzone and octinoxate. Nanoparticle-sized titanium dioxide is found in most sunscreens, due to its very high UV absorption and resistance to discolouration from UV exposure. These benefits help to protect the skin from the damaging effects of UV rays. Nano-TiO2 protects against both types of UV-A and UV-B radiation and is safer for use and the environment than organic UV absorbers. Mineral UV filter (up to 30 SPF can be obtained). 5% titanium dioxide will provide about 10 SPF and protect 90% against UVA, UVB and even UVC rays, 10% powder provides about 15-20 SPF. To make soap, titanium dioxide is mixed with glycerine or oil and added to the soap base. Up to 0,5% of the weight of the final product can be added to the clear base.

In ceramics, titanium dioxide is used as a clouding agent and as an initiator of crystal formation in the production of various types of glazes. It is used for matt and crystalline glazes, improves acid resistance and reduces crazing (glaze cracking), hardly changes colour if iron is present, and reduces lead solubility when used in small quantities.

In construction, titanium dioxide is used to make coloured concrete products. The recommended yield is 4 - 6 kg/100 kg cement. Colour intensity depends on aggregates and cement colour
