It is an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl, containing one sodium and one chlorine atom. The table salt is standardized to ASTM E534-13.

In the food industry. The main use of sodium chloride is as a table salt in a variety of food preparation applications (home cooking, restaurants, food processing plants, etc.). Salt is used as a seasoning, preservative, binder, fermentation control additive. It has long been used as a preservative for food because it removes (shrinks) water from bacteria, causing the legs to die and keeping food fresher for longer. The preservative properties are manifested when the salt concentration reaches 19% of the total weight. In the cheese industry it is used as a color, fermentation and texture control additive. In the bread industry, salt is used to control the rate of fermentation in bread dough, to reinforce gluten (an elastic complex of protein and water in certain doughs), and as a flavor enhancer.

For melting ice. The second largest use of sodium chloride is in the melting of ice from roads and in the prevention of road icing. When the weather is expected to freeze and the roads are likely to ice over, roads are sprayed with brine (saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution). The most common method of melting ice is not pure sodium chloride, but a mixture of sodium chloride with calcium and magnesium chlorides. Salt melting of ice is effective down to -10 °C. Road salt is also treated with additives to prevent it from breaking into pieces when it is spread on roads.

In industry. Sodium chloride is also used directly or indirectly in the manufacture of various chemicals. It is often used to produce sodium hydroxide and chlorine. It is also used to produce sodium carbonate and calcium chloride.

In the oil drilling industry, sodium chloride is used as an additive to drilling fluids to regulate the density of the drilling fluid. Also, when the drill bit reaches saline rock, sodium chloride is added to the drilling fluid to reduce the dissolution of that saline rock. It is also used to increase the tightness when the borehole is cemented.

In the textile and dye industries, sodium chloride is used in aqueous solution (brine) as a rinsing agent to remove organic contaminants.

For the processing of metals such as aluminum, beryllium, copper, steel or vanadium. Used as a blasting compound or as an additive to a blasting compound.

In the rubber industry, sodium chloride is used to produce synthetic or white rubber.

In water treatment, it can be used to regenerate water softening ion exchange resins.

In medicine, sodium chloride is used dissolved in water (saline). Saline can be used to rapidly deliver the necessary drugs to the body. An aqueous solution of sodium chloride is also used in nasal sprays.

In veterinary medicine, sodium chloride is used as an emetic agent.

In firefighting equipment, sodium chloride is used in Class D extinguishers for extinguishing flammable metals (magnesium, potassium, sodium and potassium sodium alloys).

In cleaning, the aqueous solution can be used as a cleaning agent for household surfaces. Sodium chloride is also used in the manufacture of various shampoos and toothpastes.

In the manufacture of optical components. Sodium chloride transmits 90 % of infrared radiation and can therefore be used for the manufacture of optical components operating in infrared environments.
