Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline purine, a methylxanthine alkaloid chemically bonded to the adenine and guanine bases of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). This compound is well known as an active ingredient in coffee or tea.
In the food industry, caffeine is used as a central nervous system stimulant that gives an invigorating effect. It is most commonly found in energy drinks and energy candy. Pure caffeine is found as a sports supplement to burn fat tissue faster, help muscles recover after workouts, and improve athletic performance. The most commonly used doses are 200mg (0.2g) per day, in exceptional cases up to 400mg (0.4g) per day, but do not exceed this as side effects such as insomnia, anxiety, dizziness, etc. start to increase and lead to a deterioration of sporting performance. It is contraindicated in persons under 18 years of age. Prohibited for pregnant and lactating women.
In agriculture and horticulture, caffeine is used as an active ingredient in the spraying of plants against pests. As it has a very bitter taste and an effect on the nervous system, it stops pests from eating plants after spraying. Caffeine has been synthesised by plants during evolution as a protection against pests, so its use in agriculture and horticulture is close to natural plant protection. Caffeine also slows/stops seed germination, which is why caffeinated solutions are used to reduce weed growth.
In cosmetics, caffeine is used as an active anti-cellulite and slimming agent. It is used externally, in topical slimming treatments. It is often found in anti-ageing and eye care products and is believed to have a rejuvenating and firming effect. Caffeine is allowed in organic cosmetics. Due to its tonic effect, caffeine is used in products with an 'energising' effect, as well as in products designed to stimulate circulation and metabolism, such as shower gels, facial cleansers, face masks, hand and body lotions, and hair care products.
