Ferric trichloride is otherwise known as trivalent ferric chloride with the formula FeCl3. It is highly soluble in water. It is commonly found as a raw material in the production of other iron compounds.

In water treatment, ferric chloride is used as a flocculant or coagulant. In mildly alkaline water, ferric chloride reacts with the hydroxyl ion to form a complex compound which helps to bind floating solids into larger aggregates and subsequently filter them out. In wastewater treatment, ferric chloride helps to precipitate phosphate ions by forming insoluble compounds, thus preventing eutrophication. Iron trichloride is also used in wastewater treatment to control odours, i.e. to reduce the smell of decay.

In the metal industry, ferrous sulphate is used as a means to help precipitate gold or other precious metals from gold chloride solutions (after dissolution in royal acid). Iron trichloride is also used in the purification of elements such as silicon (Silgrain process). Iron trichloride is also used by blacksmiths and knife makers to embellish the workpiece and thus give it a distinctive layered metal shape (Damascus steel knives or swords). Ferric chloride is used to test the corrosion resistance of stainless steel or other alloys.

In photography, it is used in the production of photogravure plates or rotogravure cylinders to etch the required image shapes. It is also used to etch iron meteorites to produce the shapes of the 'widmastatten' technique, in which iron and nickel lamellae are overlapped with each other.

In electronics, it is used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards to etch away the copper layer and leave only marked tracks. It is also used in the manufacture of sophisticated medical devices by etching control boards.

In laboratories it is used for the determination of phenolic compounds, in purity tests, e.g. purity of manufactured aspirin. Also used by numismatists and coin collectors to determine the age of Buffalo nickels, where the condition of the coins is so poor that even the date cannot be read.

In cleaning, ferric chloride is used to remove the aluminium layer from mirror surfaces.

In veterinary medicine, ferric chloride III is used to treat excessive hoof clipping/polishing. Most commonly in open and bleeding wounds. It is also used to simulate thrombosis in animals.

In ceramics, iron trichloride is used in the Raku technique, where the firing of ceramics produces pink, orange or brown hues.

In energy applications, it is used in various types of energy storage tanks/storage.
