An inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na2S2O8. It is the sodium salt of peroxydisulfuric acid (H2S2O8), an oxidizing agent. It is a white solid that is soluble in water. It is an almost non-hygroscopic material with a good shelf life. Sodium persulphate is mainly used as a radical initiator in emulsion polymerization reactions to produce styrene polymers such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. It is also used for the accelerated removal of low formaldehyde adhesives.
In organic chemistry, sodium persulphate is a specialized chemical oxidant in the classical Elbs persulphate oxidation and Boyland-Sims oxidation reactions. It is also used in radical reactions such as the synthesis of the apokinin diapoicinin, where iron(II) sulphate is a radical initiator.
In electrical engineering, sodium persulphate is used in the etching of printed circuit boards. It is used as a substitute for ammonium persulphate in order to make the etching process gentler. It is also used in zinc pickling compounds. It etches very evenly, ensures the accuracy of the drawing and does not crumple under the ink. Recommended ~10% solution (100g of material in 1L of hot water >400C) At lower temperatures, peroxide decomposition does not occur and etching stops. Do not store the produced solution in airtight containers as spontaneous decomposition may lead to pressure build-up and explosion.
In cosmetics, sodium persulphate is used as an ingredient in hair dyes. It can also be used in skin bleaches and exfoliants.
In metalworking, sodium persulfate is used in the extraction of precious metals from precious metal solutions. Sodium persulphate allows the metal ions to pass into the solid metal state by oxidation. It can also be used for mild cleaning and etching of copper surfaces.
In water treatment, sodium persulphate is used as a clarifier, purifier and disinfectant, inhibiting the growth of micro-organisms. It can also be used for groundwater and soil treatment.
In the cleaning industry, sodium persulphate is used as an ingredient in dry bleaches. Can be used as an activator in bleaching agents.
