Sodium sulphite is an inorganic, white crystalline powder with a wide range of applications. Soluble in water but insoluble in fat

In the food industry, a preservative and antioxidant with E number E221. Used in dried fruits and nuts, fruit preserves, prepared horseradish, potato products, baking powder, sausage, sweets, oil, beer, wine, soft drinks, vinegar. The recommended daily intake of sodium sulphite is 0.7 mg/kg body weight

In water improvement, sodium sulphite is used as a de-oxygenating agent to purify water supplied to steam boilers to prevent corrosion problems.

In cosmetics, sodium sulphite is used as an antioxidant to keep products stable, colourfast and odourless. Main INCI Functions:

• Antioxidant: Inhibits reactions promoted by oxygen, preventing oxidation and rancidity
• Waving or straightening : Alters the chemical structure of the hair to create the desired style
• Preservative: Inhibits the development of micro-organisms in cosmetic products.
• Reduction: changes the chemical nature of another substance by adding hydrogen or removing oxygen

In the photographic industry is used to protect developer solutions from oxidation and to flush the fixative (sodium thiosulphate) out of film and photographic paper emulsions.

In textiles it is used as a bleaching, desulphurisation and dechlorination agent. In the leather trade it is used to sulphonate tanning extracts.

In the chemical industry, sodium sulphite is also used to purify trinitrotoluene (TNT) to make it suitable for military use. It is used in chemical production as a sulphonating and sulphomethylating agent and for the production of sodium thiosulphate.
