Alternatively known as cocamide DEA, diethanolamide is a mixture of fatty acids produced by reacting coconut oil with diethanolamine. It is a viscous liquid and is used as a surfactant with a non-ionic character, one of the most popular ingredients in household chemistry, which causes and increases the foaming of the product and gives it an amber color. Coconut oil diethanolamine condensate is a mixture of diethanolamines with different saturated acid chains, consisting of approximately 48.2% lauric acid (12:0), 18% myristic acid (14:0), 8. 5% palmitic acid (16:0), 8% caprylic acid (8:0), 7% capric acid (10:0), 6% oleic acid (18:1, n-9), 2.3% stearic acid (18:0) and 2% linoleic acid (18:2, n-6)

In cosmetics, cocamide DEA is used as a thickening agent, a foam enhancer (making the foam finer and more stable, more cream-like), a detergent and viscosity modifier for shampoos (making a formulation with cocamide diethanolamine in the formulation and then adding the inorganic salts at the end to obtain a thickening effect), a foaming agent in bath products such as shampoos and hand soaps, an emulsifier in cosmetics and a thickener in solutions. This ingredient can increase foaming capacity and stabilise foam. It can also increase the viscosity of aqueous solution. Cocamide diethanolamine is highly soluble in both water and fat, making it a good emulsifier. Unlike other surfactants, it does not have a drying effect, i.e., for example, when used in cocamide DEA shampoos, the natural fatty acids it contains do not cause drying of the hair and scalp. Concentrations ranging from 1 to 25% are found. Its functions (INCI):

  • Emulsifying : Promotes the formation of intimate mixtures between immiscible liquids by modifying the interfacial tension (water and oil)
  • Emulsion stabilising : Promotes the emulsification process and improves the stability and shelf life of the emulsion
  • Foam boosting : Improves the quality of the foam produced by increasing one or more of the following properties: volume, texture and/or stability
  • Surfactant : Reduces the surface tension of cosmetics and contributes to the even distribution of the product when it is used
  • Viscosity controlling : Increases or decreases the viscosity of cosmetics

In metalworking, cocamide DEA is used as a corrosion inhibitor in water-based semi-synthetic and synthetic metalworking fluids or polishing pastes.

In the plastics industry, it is widely used as an antistatic agent, e.g. in the production of food-grade polyethylene film or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) packaging. Also, cocamide DEA is mixed with metal salts to produce an antistatic agent for polystyrene or impact-resistant rubber-polystyrene blends.

In agriculture, cocamide diethanolamine is used as a tackifier in the processing of cotton seeds.
