Succinic acid is commonly found as an intermediate in the energy metabolism of living organisms, involved in the release of energy.

In the food industry, succinic acid is used as a food additive or food supplement. It is considered safe and labelled as food additive E363. It is mostly used as an acidity regulator in the food and beverage industry. It is also used as a flavoring agent, contributing to the slightly sour and umami flavor component. It is used as a chelating agent and antioxidant to stabilize foods, their color and consistency.

In cosmetics, succinic acid is used as an antimicrobial agent because organic acids such as sorbic, benzoic and salicylic acids are used in topical products as preservative systems, but all of them are poorly soluble in water. Succinic acid has been shown to be more soluble in water and is an effective and easy to use preservative. Studies have shown that succinic acid reduces microbial growth by more than 99.9% at concentrations as low as 0.1%. For acne treatment, succinic acid can be used as an effective alternative to salicylic acid or as an enhancer of other acne ingredients. Succinic acid is used as an antioxidant to reduce the intensity of lipid peroxidation, and can therefore act as a pollution-reducing agent and improve the stability of cosmetic products. Collagen degradation inhibitor: Studies in the field of oncology show that succinic acid acts as an inhibitor of collagen degradation and therefore acts as an anti-ageing agent. It is also used as a mitochondrial activity enhancer, which can enhance mitochondrial activity in skin cells and can be used in products with skin energizing and revitalizing effects. Increased oxygen intake can accelerate the metabolism of fat cells, beneficially improving lipolysis in anti-cellulite and slimming products. For the prevention of cellular hyperproliferation, succinic acid is used to inhibit cell proliferation by stimulating mitochondrial respiration. This property may be useful to prevent hyperproliferation in the treatment of psoriasis or hyperkeratosis.

In horticulture, succinic acid is not used as a fertilizer, but rather as a growth stimulant. It affects the energy metabolism of plants, giving them more energy, resulting in faster growth, better branching, more flowers and higher yields. It can be used for watering, spraying, soaking roots or seeds. Succinic acid is suitable for all plants. Use by dissolving 1g or 1/3 of a teaspoon in 10 l of water. It is important not to overdose as the acidic effect of succinic acid can burn plants.

In the plastics industry, succinic acid can be used as a monomer in the production of biodegradable plastics. It can also be used as a starting material for the production of monomeric esters for the next generation of biodegradable plastics. The reaction of succinic acid with glycols produces polyesters, which are used as lubricants or gliding agents.

In metalworking, succinic acid is used in metal surface cleaners for mild acid and strong chelating cleaning without corrosion. Succinic acid can also be used as a corrosion inhibitor due to its strong antioxidant properties.

In schools and laboratories, succinic acid is used as a buffer, a raw material for the production of aromatic esters.
