Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a refined wood pulp and is used as a texturing agent, tackifier, fat replacer, emulsifier, extender and filler in food production. It is commonly used in vitamin supplements or tablets.

In cosmetics, microcrystalline cellulose is used as a natural component found in the cell walls of plants. These cellulose ingredients can be used in cosmetics and personal care products, including bath products, hair products, eye and face make-up, skin care products and shaving products. Use according to required functions:

  • Absorbing agent: absorbs water (or oil) in the form of dissolved or fine particles
  • Anti-agglomeration: ensures the fluidity of solid particles and limits their agglomeration in cosmetic products in powder or solid form
  • Solvent: reduces the mass of cosmetics
  • Emulsion stabilizer: promotes the emulsification process and improves the stability and shelf-life of emulsions
  • Opacifier: reduces the transparency or translucency of cosmetics
  • Stabilizer: improves the stability and shelf-life of the ingredients or formulation
  • Viscosity control agent: increase or decrease the viscosity of the cosmetic
  • Abrasive: removes material from the surface of the body, helps to clean teeth and improve gloss.

Fine or less fine white powder used in skin care. The less fine (larger particle) version is used as a gentle exfoliant (a nice natural, biodegradable alternative to the now banned plastic polythene), while the ultra-fine version is used as an exfoliating aid for a super silky, soft touch, to reduce stickiness or greasiness, and can also be used as a mattifying agent. The quantities used depend on the desired result. Amounts encountered are children's sunscreen (23,11%), adult sunscreen (9,81%), facial scrub (6,87%), anti-ageing day cream (3,59%), face cream (3,34%)

In the food industry, microcrystalline cellulose, which has been approved in the European Union as a thickener, stabilizer or emulsifier, has been given the E number E460 (i). MCC is a valuable additive in the food industry, used as an anti-sagging additive, i.e. to keep bulk products free-flowing and to prevent the absorption of moisture from the environment. It is found in instant coffee drinks, dry smoothies, vitamin mixes, etc. In order to assess its suitability for such use, various properties of the FCC are measured, namely particle size, density, compressibility index, angle of repose, powder porosity, hydration swelling, moisture sorbtion capacity, moisture content, crystallinity index, crystallite size and mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength.

In school experiments, microcrystalline cellulose is used in experiments on colloidal systems, solid/liquid (suspension) experiments, rheological experiments, as well as experiments on the production of dyes and mucilage. May be encountered in laboratory work in food preparation.
