Sodium saccharinate is also known as saccharin sweetener. Since pure saccharin is poorly soluble in water, sodium saccharinate is most commonly used as the soluble form. It is most commonly found as food sweetener E954.
In the food industry, sodium saccharinate is used as a non-caloric sweetener/sugar substitute. Its sweetness is 300-400 times stronger than that of sugar, but is accompanied by a bitter aftertaste, sometimes described as metallic, plastic or chemical. Combinations with aspartame, acesulfame, cyclamate, etc. are used to mask this. Contains E954 as a food additive. Found in soft drinks, as the volume difference caused by replacing sugar with sodium saccharinate can easily be compensated by a higher water content. It can also be found in foods for diabetics and other patients who cannot consume sugar. Sodium saccharinate is used in the coating of cigars and cigarillos to give a specific, exotic flavour.
In cosmetics, saccharin is used as a flavouring agent and is commonly found in toothpastes, mouthwashes and lipsticks. It is convenient to use because it is stable, non-reactive with acids and alkalis, and temperature-resistant.
In metalworking, sodium saccharinate is used in metal coating processes. It is most commonly used in nickel coatings as a brightener. The addition of a small amount of saccharin makes nickel softer and brighter. The most common concentrations are 0,1-0,3 g/l in the working solution.
In livestock farming, saccharin is used to flavour animal feed. It is most commonly used in pig feed and compound feeds. It can also be found in cow feed additives to increase the digestibility of the additive.
In school experiments, sodium saccharinate is used in taste experiments to distinguish and accentuate the taste characteristics of different sweeteners.
In pharmaceuticals, sodium saccharin is used as a coating for medicines. Chewable multivitamin and calcium tablets often contain sodium saccharin to enhance their taste.
In crop production, sodium saccharin is an intermediate chemical ingredient in the manufacture of pesticides and herbicides.
In the chemical industry, E954 is a catalytic agent in the production of anaerobic adhesives - glues that harden without oxygen. Anaerobic adhesives are known as fixing compounds or sealants and are used to seal and fasten tightly closed parts.
